The Idiot

"You, idiot!" the monk said after
meditation in the Zen Forest. Your
mind goes blank? You make
excellent Zen student!

I decided to take it a compliment.

I'm the idiot in the famous Zen story
about the monk who picked up a woman
and carried her over a mud-puddle

I'm also the idiot in the story who
called the monk an idiot for
picking up the woman

You know we aren't supposed to
touch women! he said. How could you
pick her up and carry her?

You idiot!

What? the other monk said. Are you
still carrying her? I put her down
a long time ago!

I'm the idiot who picked her up and
I'm the idiot who put her down and
I'm the idiot who is still carrying her.

Maybe the monk was right and
I am an idiot.
