If you're not familiar with FL's mixing board but have a mixing program you're comfortable with don't mix your beats in FL

Do a rough volume level adjustment 'till everything sounds right in FL then save at least your bassline, drumline, & melody on seperate tracks, ideally you should save every instrument you use on different tracks but saving the beat in the bare minimum of 3 tracks will give you a better mix than just applying effects on the whole instrumental track, in FL to save files seperately all you have to do is turn off the green light to the left of the pan nobs on all the channels except the ones you want to save, then make sure FL is set to play in song mode and the playlist arrangment is the right format/length you want and the right click file/save as and save the different tracks in either the highest quality .wav or .mp3 format and import the seperated tracks into the multi-track mixing program you're familiar with

When you hear the term "tracked out" this is what its referring to, having all the elements of a beat on their own seperate track for the entire beats length

I reccommend using Waves Diamond Bundle for mixing/effects, it has a wide variety of different usefull effects that are powerful with low CPU usage for the most part, & Cool Edit Pro for mixing simply because its user friendly and its the most commonly used program online so tutorials/faqs are usually easy to find for it if you're having trouble with something

Synths sounding weak?

If you're having trouble getting synths to sound full especially they're the main part of the melody, you need to look into experimenting with layers, simple volume increases won't help much

With saw based synths(the most common) what i typically like to do is create a "power synth" i'll add some bass along the melody pattern and add strings or a horn section to the melody pattern, adding chords also helps to help drive the sound, with the right sounds and key it'll make your synth sound alot stronger

With layering you have to be careful though, if you get certain notes on the same frequency it'll either create and echo or cause heavy distortion, to fix this you can either adjust the key if its off or you can eq the conflicting frequency on one of the sounds that are clashing so only one instrument is on the frequency

Also with basic synths, (square, saw, sine, etc) you can create whistles/leads or basslines simply by playing in a higher or lower range

Anybody who takes their music seriously should be thoroughly memorizing every track before recording it, it'll produce much better results than reading off paper while recording, do you see rock singers reading off paper, no, do you see rock musicians reading along as they play instruments? no, theirs obviously a reason for this

It may not seem like a big deal for recordings because you can punch-in and cover up any slips, but it's still foolish to not know your lyrics by heart because if you ever do a show you'll need to know all your lyrics, you can't stand on stage and read off paper, you can't re-do any verses, you can't punch-in to cover mistakes, it all has to be as flawless as possible

Having trouble coming up with catchy melodys for beats? This is where being a writer before becoming a producer comes in handy

Sometimes I come across a producers block in the middle of making a beat, so what I like to do is view the beat as a song rather than just an instrumental, I'll play keys until I think of a hook in my head and chop up a piece of my keyboard brainstorm that gave me the hook idea, sometimes i'll keep the first brainstorm basic so its meant for the verse section and add on to it for the verses/intro/outro by brainstorming on the melody or loosely around the main melody some other times i'll brainstorm until i knock out a complete musical hook during the first brainstrom that sounds full and strip some elements out of it to make the verses/intro/outro

I let the music talk to me instead of vice versa, the harder it is for you to think of a hook/song concept on your own music will drastically decrease other artists ability to think of a hook/direction for the beat & they won't want to use it

And no, catchy doesn't mean "dumbing down" your music, It means making something with enough replay value that people can listen to the track numerous times and not get turned off by it, good music is good music whether its really complex or really simple never matters as much as the execution

Also if you're a rapper that produces his own shit it's best to make the beat the same way you write the track, simultaniously or later, if you write hooks first make the beat-hook first, if you write verses first make the beat-verses first, etc.

quick tip that popped in my head

One thing I tend to notice about netcee's is their delivery is almost always their most significant weakness. My theory for why this is so common isn't necessarily because of inexperience, its because they're relying on their ears too late. When I make a beat I typically use a step-by-step process, I'll add things to a beat as I'm playing it I could use headphones and add things but I prefer hearing everything live coming from the same source of sound if I used headphones I would be listening to two seperate things from two seperate locations in some cases this works but alotta the time my headphones and my speakers aren't on the exact same page although they're both traveling to my ears at around the same time.

This same theory can easily be translated into recording. Most mc's weak delivery's sound to me like they're under the beat as opposed to with the beat (i'm not referring to the volume level of the vocals i'm referring to the tone of the vocals) the seperation of sound between the headphones and your vocals chords is mitigated by your brain which subconciously leads your voice to be "louder" to try to offset the noise your brain is hearing. Now typically because of the offset a person won't have much recording trouble because the volumes will be matched subconsciously but one thing the brain has more difficulty with is offsetting the vocal tone to match the tone of the beat. The volume adjustment is alot easier for the brain to process because the vocals and beat fight for superiority in the part of your brain that porcess' what you hear to try to cancel each other out or drown each others volume levels out.

A better way to get the sounds coming to your ears on the same page is to rap with the beat playing on speakers so that you're with the beat. What I like to do is to triangulate my speakers, me, and my mic so that me and the speakers are not only an equal distance away from each other but more importantly we're at an equal distance from the mic, then I'll keep either the speaker or microphone at the same level and make adjustments on the volume level of the other and my voice till everythings at the same level then un-triangulate the set-up plug in headphones and record.

While this may seem foolish and unnesscessary to some it'll help you to become one with the instrumental and make your song sound more complete. It's a technique typically used to practice for stage preforminces but it can be just as beneficial to recorded performances because musicians strive to make their stage performances sound as vibrant as their recorded performances that their audience is already familiar with, so if an artists recorded performance isn't vibrant using it as the standard by which they measure the performances that follow the original can only lead to dissapointment.
