Jesus Says...

Post by drunken jesus »

This area will cover some of my rants about perceptions and reality, some will be long, some will be short, some will be funny, some will be hateful, etc. It'll be organized anarchy loosely based on the differce between whats thought and whats true. Routinely some of rants will seem like they'd be better suited in the "Tip Of The Day" section but since alotta my life revolves around music my experiences in music will work their way into my rants.

Granted basically all of my rants will seem to be wrote from the perspective that I am righteous in my judgement, I encourage people who don't believe what I say to be to true to question my judgement. I'm not shy about saying what I believe so you shouldn't be either.

If you have a different view feel free to express it, I don't mind a debate on logic, judgement, or reasoning. Of course I will most likely disagree with what you say, but I'm man enough to concede a point to you if you change my mind on something or present your argument in such a fashion that even if I don't agree with it, I'll agree that your belief is logical and respectable.

The Professional Idiot

Post by drunken jesus »

Anyone in the online music making community has surely come across this person. He is lurking around the same forums as you, he visits the same websites as you, he may even wipe his ass with the same hand as you.

He's the professional Idiot...

He's the one repeatedly asking what equipment professionals use. He's the one asking how to make his amateur equipment sound professional. He's the one claiming his amateur creations are professional.

Professional is an interesting word... It's basic meaning is you're recognized in some way for your profession. Profession is an interesting word... It's basic meaning is a field where you have extensive formal training and expertise in, it means you have some form of education and educational proof in a field, "Profession" typically implys that not only is it something you specialize in it is something you do in order to have an income so you can do things that you're not a professional at.

I can't count how many times I've been asked in some way or another "How can I be a professional musician?" when that's not the question the persons asking at all. You cannot sound like a professional, you cannot act like a professional, you cannot look like a professional, you cannot be recognized as a professional, UNLESS YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL.

A point of reference is a necessity when comparing anything. You cannot even ask how can I be a professional. It's not specific enough at all. Just like all people aren't exactly the same all professionals aren't exactly the same, theirs various ways of acheiving any objective. You can ask how can I be like a specific professional but then you have to take into account every reason why the specific professional is a professional.

If you want your music to sound like a famous musicians find out what that musician uses, find what musician does on a daily basis, find how that musician became recognized as a musician, really asking those questions to anybody but that famous musician is completely useless because even if somebody else knows the truth them passing the knowledge to you isn't beneficial because its information you couldn't comprehend before so somebody else that comprehends it telling you isn't as useful as you figuring out that knowledge for yourself.

Typically to become a professional musician you have to have extensive training or practice in music, you have to have a firm grasp on what makes music good and bad(art if subjective so you're really having a firm grasp on why others think some form of music is good or bad). Most importantly you have to be recognized as a professional musician by others before you can really truthfully believe it yourself.

How to sound professional...

Since music is all processed through the ear then the brain of course this is the most common question. To answer this question you have to thoroughly analyze every aspect of the desired sound to the best of your ability. I'll try to cover the most common and useful analysis'

::: Recording :::

First thing and probably the most important thing here is equipment. Even in the digital age you have to analyze what you're using. You have full control over your voice... thats it. So if you don't have a "good" voice to start with you probably won't be a good vocalist, thats not to say its impossible it will just be harder to develop your ability. Things you don't have full control over is the next thing to look at. In computer based music production you have to first look at your computer to make sure its capable of running the programs you wish to use, then you have to look at the sound recording/playback of your equipment, the basic components are the microphone that captures the sound, the soundcard that the microphone is connected to that processes what the microphone captures, the digital mixer that is further processing the sound the soundcard captures, & finally the speakers that play the processed sound you have created back to your ears. Upgrading any of those can make your music sound better. Of course with digital connections the microphone, soundcard, & speakers are what can cause the most significant changes in clarity in music but post-creation processing is also important because all recorded music is processed to some degree before its heard.

::: Writing :::

Of course this is really subjective but their are some things to think about. You can write anywhere at anytime with anything so theirs no real standard for how to write music so whether its done digitally, on paper, or even in your memory it has little effect on your writing its all just more or less what you're most comfortable with. To write vocals to perform you have to really have an understanding of your vocal abilitys along with your literary abilitys. For any vocal writing you have to first figure out what the message you're trying to deliver is, after that you have stick to that message so its clear that your message gets across to others. In hip hop rhyme and rhythm are sometimes more important than reason, so with your writings both rhyme and rhythm need to be worked into whatever you do, rhyme is easy to grasp you just need to figure out how something is pronounced mainly what is accented in the pronounciation and just match the pronounciation with another sound that is really similar but not the same. With regional accents and slang existing in hip hop sometimes its not enough to match what sounds similar in the general sense, you have to also make sure to match what sounds similar in how you and most others like you would pronounce the sounds. If something rhymes on paper that doesn't necessarily mean it rhymes in your ears. Rhythm is slightly harder to grasp because theirs alot of ways to deviate and expand on just the general view of it. The basics of rhythm are the pattern & the tempo, both interlock. Tempo is simply the amount of x during a specific time period, in music the standard of tempo is BPM which is beats per minute, their are 4 beats per bar, the standard for songs is 16 bars per verse, 8 bars per chorus, theirs no real standard for song length, it varies by genre & even varies in genres, in hip hop their are typically 3 verses per song & each verse is followed by a chorus. So when writing words the only real way to translate rhythm is to count syllables and equate x amount of syllables to a musical bar or to go more indepth than that equate x stressed syllable to x stressed beat. One thing to keep in mind is the tempo is all in your control according to how fast you pronounce syllables during a certain time period, & the pattern of rhythm in which you pronounce those syllables. Rhythm pattern in vocals is mainly defined by stressed and unstressed syllables with each stressed or unstressed syllable falling on a certain cue. Rhythm has leeway you can deviate from patterns and tempo but in the end you have to have some form of cohesiveness that fits it all together. When following a rhythm in lyric writing its best to have a point of reference to translate rhythm on paper to rhythm in vocals you have to write a rhythm according to how you perform a rhythm to an instrumentals rhythm.

See all that I wrote about music? See the details in which I wrote it? Sorta sound like something a professional musician would write?

But... I DON'T CONSIDER MYSELF A PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN. Because I'm not a professional musician it's not what I do for a living, making music is simply just something I do while I'm living. If you're not making enough money to maintain all the costs of your living situation through writing, recording, or performing music you're not a professional musician. If you think otherwise you are a professional that deserves credit where credit is due though. You're a professional idiot. Albeit one of the most common varities, but you're still a shining star among your type. You're in a class above the rest of your type. You're absolutely perfect at what you do. You are a professional, you should take pride in your idiocy. Feel free to flaunt it, project your idiocy on display, get paid for your idiocy you are a professional after all, why not maintain a living doing what you do. Inspire people to get off their couch in Loserville, Suburbia, and put their idiocy on display for the world to see. People would travel miles and miles to see your idiocy on display. Cash in.
