production/recording help?

I been doing text battles on another site for awhile now and I've been itchin to make the transition to audio but this shit is hella confusing to a newbie. I don't know how to mix my vocals w/ the beat without it turning out sounding like shit. I don't have an extravagant set up by any means...just a pc, a mic, some headphones, and audacity that I downloaded cause it didn't cost 34546546456467 dollars. Just looking to experiment with laying some tracks so any input would help...
