New York City symbolically banned use of the N-word on Wednesday, the latest step in a campaign that hopes to get rid of the racial slur that has become popular among teenagers and hip-hop fans.

The City Council unanimously declared a moratorium that, while offering no penalty for using the word, aims to stop youth from casually using it.
